The Citroen C4 is the first car to offer vibrating panels to warn the driver of a hazard. The optional system detects when the car is wandering across lanes and vibrates the side of the driver’s that matches thedirection of drift. This alerts the driver to the lack of control, but without the sudden burst of noise of a conventional warning that could cause the driver to overreact and steer suddenly in the other direction.
While I can see how this is a very, very good idea for some people, I just don’t get how having my ass vibrate is going to alert me to a fallen Redwood in the middle of the road if I can’t see it already. People who don’t pay attention when they are driving shouldn’t have the luxury of having anything vibrate. Hell, they shouldn’t have the luxury of owning a driver’s license.
I think a system where the car takes over the steering and brakes would be much more suitable although I could only imagine running across 77 cars a day that make a freakish stop for some unknown reason.
The lesson here is to simply not engage in any extracurricular activities while driving. Plain and simple.
