Review: Nokia n800

The Nokia N800 is a quandary. Is it a cellphone, or a gadget? It’s a gadget, which is not something to be concerned from with the Nokia camp. Nokia has been making great gadgets for years, we’ve just never seen them states side.

XM/Sirius Offering New Price Points Post-Merger

We already know just how “priceless” the XM / Sirius merger will be, that your current radio will probably still function just fine, and that both firms are still facing legal heat in one way or another, but we hadn’t heard just how the newlyweds would handle the pricing of the new service — until now. In a decision sure to make a few people elated while giving a hint of suspicion to most others, the merged company will offer customers a package that includes “less channels” at a monthly price lower than $12.95, one that seems “substantially similar” for exactly $12.95, and finally, a third option that touts even more channels for “a modest premium.” We can only assume that the pricey third alternative will boast a nice mixture of both companies’ existing lineups, but unfortunately, it also leaves open the possibility that the cheaper two options might exemplify the “you only get what you pay for” tagline.

Apple TV, already hacked?

n13_31978531_2779.jpg

By now I would imagine you’ve seen the pictures floating around the internet. Now some users are declaring they have loaded non-supported Codecs like XviD. The actual hacking shouldn’t be too hard for the skilled, it involves removing and mounting App TV’s hard drive and installing a few scripts. Odds are this is a fake, or a haox, but stay tuned for more news on it.

Samsung Blu-Ray player, and CD burner.

samsung_SE-B046.jpg

Samsung’s External Blu-Ray is something special to look at. Especially in that blue light. The drive writes BD-R discs at 4X and BD-RE at 2x. It uses a second laser to handle DVD and CD burning (I believe burning), and does it all via USB2.0 and Firewire. Coming in 2008.

Apple WWDC Announcement

applewwdc07.jpg

For consumers who are trying to get a whole bunch of new products and details out of Apple’s WWDC event in June, let us just warn you now. You’ll be disappointed. The WWDC is for Apple developers as GDC is for game developers, which means iPod and hardware launches are unlikely. Then again, the iPhone could be making a sneak appearance. In any case, here are the details.

Apple’s going to be focusing on Leopard, media content delivery, immersion track for new developers, developer tools, and whatever else they usually focus on there. So don’t get your hopes up.

Fujitsu Now With Solid State HD’s.

fujitsulifebookp1610.jpg

Fujitsu this morning has given a few of their computers a new lease. The 12.1-inch LifeBook B6210 and 8.9-inch P1610 will both have the option of coming with either a 16GB or 32GB solid state drive. Because flash drives have no moving parts, they’ll help speed up performance and save battery life, although the drives will add a $700 (16GB) and $1,200 (32GB) premium to the tablets’ prices.

Reports in: Less Painful To Pirate Vista Than Suffer Registering

Windows VistaThose are the words of Brian Livingstone, a renowned expert on the inner working of Microsoft Windows: in a post on WindowsSecrets.com, he exposes a backdoor route around activation which effectively destroys activation as an antipiracy measure. That, in and of itself, isn’t a particularly surprising development (we’ve already seen two exploits that skip or bypass activation); no, the real story is the fact that the exploit was created by Microsoft itself. The “SkipRearm” process involves some simple editing of Registry files that can “extend the activation deadline of Vista indefinitely.” This backdoor was created to help corporations keep machines working whilst they work under the heavy burden of prepping systems for Vista activation. If they can’t do it within Vista’s 30 day grace period, they can postpone activation by 30 days up to three times using the “sysprep /generalize” command: SkipRearm can be executed indefinitely. Specifically, Microsoft documentation says “Microsoft recommends that you use the SkipRearm setting if you plan on running Sysprep multiple times on a computer.” Now that Windows Activation could potentially help pirates as well as annoy legitimate Windows owners, it’s hard to see how Microsoft will be able to continue to justify using this ineffective, draconian system.

CarPC… for… PC’s in your Car?

Shuttle rather obviously has a new PC coming out for their line, called CarPC. I bet you can’t guess why they named it that. The PC measures in at 279 x 230 x 70-mm and features the ability to automatically shut itself down gracefully when you turn off your vehicle. Shuttles Fin chassis holds a 1.83Ghz Intel T2400 Core Duo Processor, and it’s supposed to have an HD. No word if it’s shock proof, but one can only hope. Along with Intel’s GMA 950 graphics and 7.1 audio out. This will also have DVI out and 4x USB ports. All the outputs are put on one side so you could hide it in a dash, or an armrest to gain access to the ports. No price point yet, but still kind of sexy.
